It Gets Better...Kinda

2020.09.25 21:21 Axelismyfakename It Gets Better...Kinda

I teach English at the same high school where my son is currently a senior.
Last year, before the outbreak, I had a year where I was able to see “Jacob” every day. He and I walked the same halls. I passed by him in the quad. Once we were both heading into the same bathroom during 5th period, me, at the last second, taking a sharp left back to my classroom. I had one full year where I could observe my 16-year-old from the parking lot, me in my Jeep, him outside of his 0 period construction class where he was building…something…with bricks.
Never got to find out if he was building a chimney or a barbecue.
But stalking was as far as it went, for I have not exchanged a spoken word with my son in almost two years; I lost that privilege when I left his brothers and mothers to live “my full authentic life” in 2019. See for Jacob, it was hard enough that his mom and dad were divorcing. Then he had to find out his dad was gay. And it wasn’t long after that when most of the student body—several thousand actually—found out the truth behind the demise of my marriage.
There’s a lot of holes I’m not filling in here, but, ultimately, I was shut-out of his life. Most days I don’t blame him.
Even though both my ex-wife and I knew I was gay before we married, we gave it a shot anyway, the marriage lasting, surprisingly, twenty-four years before I gave up, or as some ex-church friends would say “gave IN.” It had been twenty-four years— plus four years of dating—before I finally decided to put a stop to the small men’s biblical accountability group sessions…the sniffing-of-dog-crap-in-a-Mason-jar-aversion-therapy…the male basketball bonding sessions with eight other gay men, shooting the ball and not caring if it made it into the hoop as long as it “looked masculine.”
When I finally came out at 47, it wasn’t without a fight. An almost forty year fight within my convoluted psyche where I had accepted, almost embraced, the “you’ll go to hell” period and the ever clichéd “your mother and I will kick you out of our lives” years. It didn’t even really phase me when I was told by a Christian colleague that it would have been better if I had “committed suicide and went to heaven than to die naturally and go to hell as a homosexual.” Interestingly enough, I’m still friends with that guy to this day—in some twisted rationale, I didn’t want to kick people out of my life anymore than I hadn’t wanted people to kick me out of theirs.
Since I got to see Jacob at school several days a week, I’m luckier than some divorced dads whose children they only see weekly on FaceTime, weekends, and/or two weeks in the summer. And truthfully, it wasn’t like my son didn’t communicate with me at all—he burned one of my letters and then texted me a picture of the letter on fire. The text “Keep ‘em coming!” followed the picture before he quickly blocked me again. I guess I taught him something: his accurate apostrophe usage was unusual for a kid his age.
Side note: since I am his father and FAR more clever, I wrote him a follow-up letter on sheet metal and FedEx’ed it to his house. Then I picked up my pen and started writing him letters in the side blank liner notes in my Bible. As of this writing, I’m up to 1 Samuel 29. Trust me: he won’t burn those letters.
And, yes, I am very aware that from birth to the present, I taught my three boys the Bible’s “traditional” view of same sex relationships. Admittingly, I did “make my own bed;” I made many decisions of which I will have to live with the consequences. After all, no one forced me to marry, no one forced me to have children, and no one forced me to once believe that God would “fix me” through hetero marriage.
So that begs an answer to the question: if I could turn back time, would I “take it all back?” After all, I’m looking at a future where I will most likely have fragile, tenuous relationships with two sons and a non-existent one with the other. I can hold on to the fact that Jacob might come around, but I know my kid better than those who try to lift my spirits with this platitude. What they don’t know is while Jacob is like his mother in so many wonderful ways, they both share a passion for hating those who hurt them. And when they hate, they hate forever.
Still, I wouldn’t do anything different; the domino effect would be too altering. I wouldn’t have not married my ex-wife because then I wouldn’t have my children. I wouldn’t have not had children because, hey, they’re my boys. But treating that closet door like it was a swinging kitchen one was honestly a real temptation. And I was close to doing just that about a month after I first left. There I was, sitting in a mental institution—just three tables down from an ex-student by the way, also a patient—and my soon-to-be-ex-wife said, “Come back and I’ll forgive you for everything. You can really try this time because up until now, the gay feelings aren’t going away because you just aren’t letting God heal you. You just haven’t tried.”
To this day that is the only thing I really hold against her.
So while the swinging door is now made from two inches of solid oak, forever secured with one of those steel bars you see on castle doors in the old black and white horror films, the only thing I would change...reconsider maybe…is the idea of putting so much faith in the LGBTQ anthem “It Gets Better.” This phrase, splashed all over the internet against backdrops of another familiar gay symbol, did get me through some very dark hours. It got me out of bed and got me back into the classroom. It allowed me to often enjoy living my life as a gay man, and I found I didn’t hate myself…as much. But my problem is this: the mantra is not always true. To be fair, I would imagine for some folks it does get better. But that’s not always the case for me and countless other men and women who clung on to the same hope, the one where we figured anxiety and depression and sleeping pills and forty-five minute therapy sessions—that technically should be an hour—would be a thing of the past once we just admitted to ourselves “who we really were.” For many, life doesn’t necessarily get better. Some of us just exchanged one powerful grief for another.
So I would like to make a request: I would like to see the phrase changed from “It Gets Better” to “It Gets Better…In Some Ways, Sure. In Some Ways It Will Get Shittier…and It Will Most Likely Stay That Way.”
Kind of long for an aphorism, but it’s more honest nonetheless.
I like who I am now, but I miss my son. I don’t know which one is right.

2020.09.25 19:45 trifletruffles Mattie Greene-killed in a bomb explosion in Ringgold, Georgia on May 19, 1960-Closed Case under the Civil Rights Division Emmett Till Act

Mattie Greene was the mother of six children when she was killed in a dynamite explosion that destroyed her home in Ringgold, Georgia on May 19, 1960. She was 32 years old at the time. Mattie's husband, Jethro, and 13 year old Jethro Jr., 6 year old David, 4 year old William, along with 17 month old Larry were all in the house at the time and suffered minor injuries. Mattie's remaining two children were not home at the time as they were staying at their grandmother's. Authorities initially suspected Jethro since he only suffered a bruised shoulder and investigations revealed that Mattie was involved in an extramarital affair. However, he was eventually cleared. Governor Ernest Vandiver offered a $500 reward for any information and despite the involvement of the FBI, no one was ever arrested for Mattie's murder.
Jethro served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a construction foreman. After the war ended, he worked as an auto mechanic and married Mattie who worked as a housekeeper. After clearing Jethro, authorities suspected that he and his family might have been targeted due to possible involvement with the NAACP. However, it is unclear if he was a member since NAACP records regarding Ringgold and Catoosa County were not kept. A local sheriff, J.D. Stewart, suspected that many men were meeting at a local home under the pretense of being part of a singing group but these men were actually holding NAACP meetings. Jethro was noted to have been part of a singing group and was often featured on local radio. Nevertheless, it remains unclear the extent of Jethro's advocacy and his 1994 obituary only lists an affiliation with the A. Randolph Institute which advocated for labor rights.
In April 2009, as part of efforts to solve civil rights-era homicide cases, the FBI in conjunction with the Department of Justice started an investigation of Mattie's murder under the Emmett Till Civil Rights Act. It tried to review initial investigation files but they were all either destroyed in a flood during the 1970s or were destroyed as part of general document retention procedures. Most of the information from the investigation comes from a redacted copy of the initial FBI file provided to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Since the files were lost or destroyed, the FBI began its current investigation by interviewing various relatives and children of Mattie. They also interviewed members of the community who were familiar with Lester Waters and W.E. Watters. Lester and W.E. were rumored to have been involved in the explosion.
Mattie's [relationship and name redacted] was interviewed by the FBI. The individual stated that she was told by then Sheriff J.D. Stewart that Lester had confessed to the crime and that guilt had driven him crazy. Sheriff Stewart told this individual that he transported Lester to a mental institution in Milledgeville, Georgia. Another of Mattie's [relationship and name redacted] stated she was approached by a white woman years ago who said Lester was involved and it drove him crazy to the point where he had to be taken to a Milledgeville institution.
Based on these two recollections, the FBI conducted interviews with W.E. and Lester's family. Lester, W.E. and Sheriff Stewart are deceased. Lester's [relationship and name redacted] stated that [name redacted] was active in the Ku Klux Klan and that [name redacted] was good friends with Sheriff Stewart and Lester; they would often hold meetings at Lester's house which centered around a hatred of blacks and Jews. Accordingly, the FBI interviewed [name redacted] who denied they had anything to do with Mattie's murder. It was noted that [name redacted] worked for U.S. Pipe and Foundry on an I-75 construction project at the time. [Name redacted]'s place of employment is interesting because the original FBI file noted that the I-75 construction project involved demolition, namely the use of ammonium nitrate and electric dynamite caps. The initial investigation file noted that a piece of red and orange wire was found near Mattie's home; this wire was the type used in manufacturing electric dynamite caps. It is unclear if the FBI pursued this lead any further beyond calling the superintendent of U.S. Pipe and Foundry.
After interviewing [name redacted], the FBI tried to find out more about the type of work [name redacted] would have been involved in. Original employment records were destroyed but the FBI was able to get in touch with an operations manager who noted that in 1960, no dynamite would have been present at the work site due to the type of work being done. The FBI asked [name redacted] to take a polygraph test which they passed. As the FBI was not able to develop any new leads, the Department of Justice closed the case. Mattie's murder remains unsolved.
Discussion:
The closing memorandum discussed Jethro as a suspect after investigations showed that Mattie was involved in an extramarital affair. While an individual was identified, it is unclear if this individual was questioned. For some reason, Jethro's name was redacted in the memorandum when it discussed his injuries as noted by the statement "it seemed almost impossible, after viewing the scene, that XXX suffered as little injury as XXX" but based on the context, I was able to surmise the memorandum was discussing Jethro.

https://www.courthousenews.com/%EF%BB%BFfbi-document-suggests-klan-behind-unsolved-1960-bombing/
I came across the Department of Justice’s cold case initiative (Emmett Till Civil Rights Act) while reading an article discussing journalists’ efforts to install a billboard on an Arkansas highway aimed at solving the 1954 lynching of Isadore Banks. The Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice launched a website (linked above) to make information about the department’s investigation of cold cases from the Civil Rights Era more accessible to the public. As a result of the initiative, the Department of Justice has prosecuted and convicted Edgar Ray Killen for the 1964 murders of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi (the "Mississippi Burning" case); he is the eight defendant convicted. The Department has also been able to charge and convict perpetrators of the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama and secured a life sentence for James Ford Seale for the kidnapping and murder of two teenagers in Franklin County, Mississippi in 1964.
Unfortunately, many cases which were submitted to the Department of Justice remain unsolved due to the passage of time resulting in evidentiary and legal barriers. In each case that is not prosecutable, the Department of Justice wrote a closing memorandum explaining the investigative steps taken and the basis for their conclusion. To date, the Department of Justice has uploaded 115 closing memos. I hope to be able to post on all of the closed cases as I share in the belief with the Department of Justice that “these stories should be told [as] there is value in a public reckoning with the history of racial violence and the complicity of government officials.”

2020.09.25 14:36 VisibleConfusion69 Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc- If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.09.25 07:07 annehenrietta Is it me or is there a surge of christian fundamentalists?

So I live in Mexico, a predominately catholic country, but until recently I always felt that for most Mexicans being a catholic was little more than social and cultural convention. Seldom did I encounter hardcore church goers. I mean when I was a teenager I’d attend the 8 PM service with my friends every Sunday only because it was THE meet-up spot to run into cute girls who basically were there for the exact same reason. I even signed up for a kind of crash course to be confirmed as a catholic only because it would get me out of school for a couple of days, and indeed many people I know did the same. Every sacred date for catholics was a free pass to hang out and ditch classes, and so on. Still, I never perceived it other than casual occurrences and a normal part of growing up Mexican. I know most of my close friends share a similar view and had almost identical experiences growing up. None of us went back to church after the mandatory services we had to endure in high school (most private schools are catholic), except to attend a wake or a funeral, you know, ‘cause grannies get sad if they don’t see you at church when some random third cousin of theirs kicks the bucket.
Anyway, my point is a lot of us here grow up catholic, but aren’t, not really. However more and more do I see an aggressive catholic/christian agenda being pushed. Bigotry is on the rise, the abandonment of common sense and freedom of thought is becoming apparent. I have a hard time describing it but I suppose what frightens me is seeing people I know, even some I cared for or respected, wilfully complying with dogma, submitting too literally to the moral guidelines church provides, shunning their friends for not doing the same. Downright frustrating I must say, because as many of you know, there’s no dialogue to be had there. I feel once they’ve embarked on that path chances are they won’t challenge their beliefs.
Bottom line is these are things as I perceive them, but does anyone feel the same way? Are christians bringing back their greatest hits from the Middle Ages?
Hail thyselves homies!

2020.09.25 04:28 Red-Heat After the End CK3 Dev Diary 1: Overall Vision and Scope and Final CK2 Update

After the End CK3 Dev Diary 1: Overall Vision and Scope and Final CK2 Update
Good tidings, all!
I'm still on hiatus at the moment, but I thought I would take this time to tell you all about the direction we're taking for the CK3 version of the mod and the final changes we plan to make for the Fan Fork. As of right now, our working title is After the End CK3, but this is subject to change, as is everything else shown here. I'd like to get one thing out of the way as well - we do not have any release date projections right now. This project could release six months from now or six years from now. I really cannot say. Now then, onto the dev diary.
The Vision
After the End CK3 is not going to be a 1:1 copy or "port" of the Fan Fork, because that would be impossible anyway. CK3's scripting engine and hardcoded mechanics are so radically different from anything in CK2 that it's less a question of what we will keep and more a question of what we can salvage. Instead, we want AtE CK3 to be more like a remake or sequel of the CK2 mod.
We plan to build on the foundation laid by the Fan Fork, but we also won't be afraid to completely rework, replace, or even delete elements that we aren't happy with or that won't work in CK3. This applies to political setup, in-game history, and entire cultures or religions. Nothing is sacred, and nothing is safe. (Except Americanism. That stays.)
Our team has two main focuses at the moment - creating religions and faiths and building the map.
The Map
Our dedicated team of map modders have decided to challenge themselves by vastly expanding the scope of the in-game map. Here's an image of the current Fan Fork map...
The Fan Fork's map as of v1.1.
And here's an image of the planned CK3 projection.
Yep.
We're going all the way from the tip of Tierra Del Fuego to the northern shore of Alaska and everything in between. We even have Svalbard in the top right. (My mappers assure me that it makes sense, assuming a spherical Earth.)
As you might imagine, creating new cultures, religions, and histories for all of South America south of Venezuela is no small feat. That's why we've decided to partner with devs from the upcoming AtE South America spinoff, Sob o Anil. Their CK2 mod will still release as a standalone, but the content they have already developed will be used to shape AtE CK3's version of South America. This means, in effect, that Sob o Anil has become part of the Fan Fork's shared universe. (More on this later.)
Religions and Faiths
Let's move on to talking about religions and faiths. We are nowhere near done with this and probably won't be for at least another month, but we have laid a basic groundwork. Let's discuss the two top-level families that you are probably most anxious to hear about: the Antiquarian and Abrahamic families.
The Antiquarian family contains most of the religions that were part of the Old World Cultist religion group in the Fan Fork. This includes fan favorites like:
Americanism.
Foundrycraft (formerly Rust Cultist).
Atomicism.
Consumerism.
As you can see, each of these former CK2 religions have been spun off into faith groups under the Antiquarian family. This will let us more precisely control how these faiths view each other across groups and within groups. For example, Americanism and Libertarianism are generally okay with one another, while Atomicists and Aphites are... less okay with each other. You may have also noticed that each of these faiths have custom tenets - the new CK3 religious system will let us give each faith more depth than was possible in CK2 while also making it easier for different faiths to access similar features.
Now, let's talk about the Abrahamic family, starting with the Christian faiths. I won't be able to show them all off here, so I'll show you one of them with a list of other Christian faiths.
Wait, what?
Description:
When contact with Rome was lost, the Catholics of the Caribbean mostly retained their faith and did not recognize a new head. Instead, the various archdioceses began to administer the church according to their local authority an Insula, or island community, with their own rites. These rites, amounting to almost full canons, contain both functional law and local saints. Although they theoretically are pending approval by the Pope in Rome, they are treated as valid in his absence. Most lay practitioners trust that their bishops do their due diligence and consider their local traditions to be in line with mainstream Catholicism. Other Catholics would note that many Insular Christians venerate 'African saints' that are suspiciously similar to figures from other nearby religions.
Insular Christianity is a good example of the steps that we will take in CK3 to expand on the foundation laid in CK2. As mentioned above, CK3 lets us model interfaith relations with a level of subtlety and complexity that was not possible in CK2. We are taking advantage of this by, among other things, adding new forms of Christianity that "bridge the gap" between traditional Catholicism and faiths that are... less traditional.
On that note, I'd like to explain something about the faith assignments in CK3. The rigid nature of interfaith relationships in CK2 meant that we were sometimes forced to place certain religions outside of the "Christian" group, even though members of these religions would certainly identify as Christian. This is no longer an issue, and faiths will now be grouped (mostly) according to the self-identification of practitioners. For example, Mormons, who were assigned their own religion group in CK2, will now be part of the Christian faith group in CK3, with special doctrines controlling relations between Mormons and other Christians. The same applies to all former "Cult of Saints" religions and "Amero-Syncretic" religions - they will all be in the Christian faith group and will rely on special doctrines to govern interfaith relations.
However, certain Christian-adjacent faiths will still be placed in other groups and families for gameplay purposes and to better reflect self-identity. For example, Rastafari is assigned its own faith group, with each mansion now being a faith unto itself. This is because many Rastas identify themselves as either entirely separate from Christianity or as part of a group that is highly distinct from other Christians.
The Nyabinghi Order.
Similarly, many of the former Afro-Syncretic faiths have been placed in their own Afro-Syncretic family, with new faith groups being created to illustrate the differences between faiths in this family.
The Vodun faith group. Please don't make low-effort jokes about the tenet name.
Although many practitioners of these faiths would identify as Christian if asked, it is more accurate to say that they are both Christian and (for example) Candomble. They attend both Christian churches and Candomble houses, even though the Bible explicitly condemns many of the things that happen in Candomble houses. They respect both Christian bishops and Candomble maes-de-santo, even though the bishop may not accord any respect to a a mae-de-santo. They see each of their two beliefs systems as equally valid and may even believe that God and Olodumare are two terms for the same being, even though Christianity is officially antithetical to these ideas.
Unfortunately, CK3 does not let us assign two religions to the same person or the same county, so we had to draw a hard line between them. This line is mitigated by the existence of faiths like Insular Christianity, which is non-hostile to Afro-Syncretic faiths and is intended to be a middle ground between the two groups, but it still exists.
Of course, the Abrahamic group includes Islam and Judaism as well as Christianity. Here's a look at one of the Jewish faiths.
Reform Judaism.
Now that we have thoroughly covered the particulars of the Christian faith group, let's move on to discussing the changes we plan to make in our final major Fan Fork update.
The Final Fan Fork Update
Well, we had a good run, but my interests have moved from CK2 to CK3. CK3 is just so much more flexible for modders - going back to CK2 feels like reinstalling Windows XP. As a result, I've decided that the next Fan Fork update will be the final major update to the project. We may still release updates to fix bugs, but we won't add any new religions or cultures or anything like that. So, what's going to be in this update? I'll be releasing regular dev diaries about it, but I'd like to get something out of the way first.
After a discussion with the dev team of After the End: Old World, we have decided that it would be best for both of us to officially part ways. The Old World project has been fully independent from the Fan Fork from its very inception. I have never had any real input on what their team does, and vice-versa. We communicate very rarely, and it is usually not related to creative decisions. However, many members of the AtE community and the Crusader Kings community at large do not understand this. They frequently assume that the projects have the same or similar team members, they use features in one mod as a basis to suggest changes in the other, and they even conflate the two by simply referring to both as "After the End".
To that end, the Old World team has agreed to stop using the AtE name for its upcoming CK2 update and for any future CK3 project. All further development on Old World CK2, as well as any development for an Old World CK3, will diverge greatly from the Fan Fork and AtE CK3. Hopefully, this should cement our projects as being completely independent from one another.
Now that I have explained this, I would like to get into the first major changes we will make to the Fan Fork in our final update. We plan to overhaul all content regarding Atlantic invasions and overseas contact, to better reflect our own creative desires and to add more depth and variety to gameplay.
Invaders from Great Britain will no longer have a single British culture, nor will they adhere to just one religion. This will be explained further in an upcoming Fan Fork dev diary.
Taking the Atlantic path for the Hajj to Mecca will involve a stop in Tangiers rather than Gibraltar. Here, you will meet a Muslim Moroccan and travel overland across North Africa to Mecca.
A new invading force from Africa will be added. This will be explained further in an upcoming Fan Fork dev diary.
We will integrate mods other than Sob o Anil into the Fan Fork's shared universe. This will be explained further in an upcoming Fan Fork dev diary.
Finally, al-Sayyid has asked me to make a few specific announcements:
  1. Seminoles will be added to the Everglades in Florida.
  2. The Mouse will get a ton of new content, including unique artifacts and a religion conversion event.
That concludes this first dev diary for After the End CK3. I hope you are all looking forward to both it and the final Fan Fork update.

2020.09.25 03:43 xylopolist The Rookie Report: Week 3 Starts & Sits

Welcome back to the Rookie Report! Hopefully your fantasy team came out of week 2 without a bunch of red letters next to players’ names. Last weekend was a bloodbath across the NFL as 4 players who may have been 1st round picks in your fantasy draft left the week with injuries (CMC, Saquon, Davante Adams & Julio Jones), along with a host of others. If your fantasy team didn’t suffer major injuries, you came out of the week in pretty good shape. Some of these injuries are going to open the door for rookies to step into bigger roles in the immediate future, and I’m here to help you sort through what to do with your rookies in week 3. Let’s dive in…
Editor's Note: This article was posted before the start of Thursday Night Football (Dolphins @ Jaguars).

Rookies to Start:

RB Jonathan Taylor, IND (Wk. 3: vs. NYJ): This one is a no-brainer. Taylor put the Colts’ offense on his back last Sunday against Minnesota, and he’s likely to do the same this week with Indy favored by double-digits. The Jets are much tougher against the run than they are against the pass, but volume alone should get Taylor where he needs to be. The Jets have allowed the 8th-most RB points per game this season. He’s a locked in RB1 this week with top-5 potential. He’ll likely be a chalk play for DFS cash games even at his $7,000 DraftKings price tag.
RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, KC (Wk. 3: @ BAL): This is not an ideal matchup for CEH. I mention him as a guy to start because you know the volume will be there. You likely drafted him in the first round, and there really aren’t any weeks to sit your first-round pick if he’s healthy. The Ravens allowed the 6th-fewest RB points per game a season ago, and have allowed THE fewest so far in 2020. They also ranked 4th in Football Outsiders’ run defense DVOA stat in 2019 (3rd so far in 2020). Edwards-Helaire is more of a contrarian DFS play this week, but you have to run him out there in season-long leagues. Just know to temper your expectations a little bit.
RB Josh Kelley, LAC (Wk. 3: vs. Car.): Week 3 has a chance to be Kelley’s best week all year. There is no better matchup for a running back than the Carolina Panthers, and everything shapes up for Kelley to see at least 15 carries. The Panthers’ run defense is bad by any metric. They ranked dead last in Football Outsiders’ run defense DVOA stat in 2019 and rank 29th so far in 2020. They also allowed the most RB fantasy points last year, and have allowed the most so far in 2020, and they’ve been surrendering rushing touchdowns at a ridiculous rate. Carolina has allowed 18 rushing touchdowns in their last 7 games dating back to last season, including 3 in each of the first two games this year. Kelley and Ekeler split the lead back role pretty evenly in week 2, and I didn’t see anything from Kelley that makes me think that will change this week. The rookie has a very solid floor in this one and has top-12 upside if he’s able to get in the end zone. He should probably be in your lineup if you have him.
RB James Robinson, JAX (Wk. 3: vs. Mia.): Everything is setting up for a breakout for Robinson on the national stage on Thursday night. The rookie has looked great through two weeks in average matchups. He’s the RB26 so far on the season in PPR scoring, and he’s looked even better than that ranking would suggest. He’ll face off with one of the worst run defenses in the league in week 3. The Dolphins have ranked in the bottom-4 in the league in run defense DVOA both last season and so far in 2020 and have given up 5.1 yards per carry on the ground so far this season. I expect Robinson to have a bit of a coming-out party on Thursday night and think a top-15 finish for the week is very possible.
WR CeeDee Lamb, DAL (Wk. 3: @ SEA): Lamb has wasted no time showing why the Cowboys were thrilled when he fell to them in the first round of the NFL draft. He’s clearly an integral part of the offense with 15 targets in the first two weeks. The Seahawks are 2-0, but they have a burnable secondary and have given up an insane 831 passing yards through two weeks. This is a spot to get all of the Cowboys’ pass-catchers into your lineup, especially after head coach Mike McCarthy told the media he has no intention to try and milk the clock to keep the ball away from Russell Wilson. This should be the most entertaining game of the week, and CeeDee Lamb should be a solid WR2 in it.
WR Laviska Shenault, JAX (Wk. 3: vs. Mia.): Along with James Robinson, Viska may also be in line for a big night. DJ Chark has been ruled out, leaving Shenault and Keelan Cole as the top 2 receivers. You may have 3 better options than Shenault on your team and not be able to find a place in your lineup for him, but he’s going to be a huge part of the game plan. The Jaguars will move him around enough to keep him away from Xavien Howard, and with Bryon Jones out that will put him in some mismatches in his favor. Shenault is an upside WR3 on Thursday night against a Miami secondary that let Josh Allen throw for 411 yards last week.

Borderline Rookies:

QB Joe Burrow, CIN (Wk. 3: @ PHI): Burrow had a very nice fantasy day last Thursday night against the Browns, but it could’ve been even better if he hadn’t been so hell-bent on forcing the ball to AJ Green all night. The Eagles’ secondary hasn’t been great so far this year ranking 27th in pass defense DVOA, but the best member of that secondary, Darius Slay, should be shadowing Green. If Burrow can avoid tunnel vision with Green again, there is a chance at a respectable day. I wouldn’t be considering Burrow in 1-QB leagues and his outlook this week isn’t as rosy as his matchup with the Browns was, but he should be a low-end QB2 option with a very solid floor.
RB Antonio Gibson, WAS (Wk. 3: @ CLE): Gibson seems to have wrestled the starting job away from Peyton Barber in Washington, and with so many running backs injured right now you may be forced to play him. Just be aware this isn’t a great matchup and he’ll still cede some work to Barber and JD McKissic. The Washington offense as a whole isn’t a high-scoring unit and has an implied total of just 18.5 points this week. The Browns did give up two short yardage scores to JK Dobbins in week one, but have still allowed the 7th-fewest RB points per game and rank 4th in run defense DVOA. Gibson’s volume makes him an enticing flex option, but he’s far from an automatic start and not someone I would be using in DFS lineups this week.
RB D’Andre Swift, DET (Wk. 3: @ ARI): What a difference a week makes for the Lions’ backfield usage. In week one with the Lions leading most of the day, Adrian Peterson touched the ball 17 times while Swift handled just 6 touches. In week 2 with the team trailing Green Bay for most of the game, Swift out-touched Peterson 10-to-7. The key for Swift is that he’s been heavily involved in the passing game with 8 receptions on 10 targets through 2 weeks. The Lions are a 5.5-point underdog this week, so the usage should slant in Swift’s direction again, and Arizona has allowed scores each of the last two weeks to backs with similar skill-sets to Swift (Jerick McKinnon & Antonio Gibson). Swift is in play as a PPR flex option in a game where Detroit has an implied total of 24.5.
WR Jerry Jeudy, DEN (Wk. 3: vs. TB): The injury to Courtland Sutton moves Jeudy up to the top of the Broncos’ WR depth chart, and thanks to how much time he spends in the slot he’ll be able to avoid Tampa’s top CB Carlton Davis for most of this game. Jeudy lines up in the slot on about two-thirds of his snaps. No team allowed more points to opposing wide receivers than Tampa a year ago, and they allowed DJ Moore and Robby Anderson to each top 100 yards last week. Jeudy should be in line to see 7+ targets this week and is very much in the WR3 conversation in all formats.
WR Michael Pittman Jr., IND (Wk. 3: vs. NYJ): Pittman stands to be the biggest beneficiary of Parris Campbell’s trip to the IR. His snap share rose from 53% in week 1 up to 92% in week 2 with Campbell going down on his first touch of the game. Pittman should continue to be a full-time player at least until Campbell returns. This game figures to be a blowout where Indy will lean on Jonathan Taylor and the run game, but Pittman was targeted 6 times in a game that went that way last week. The Colts have an implied total of 27 points, and dating back to the start of last season, 66% of the offensive TDs the Jets have allowed have been through the air. At 6’4”, Pittman figures to be a factor in the red zone. If he gets 6+ targets in this one, he’ll have a great chance at finishing among the top-40 WRs and should outproduce his $4,000 price tag in DraftKings.

Rookies to Sit:

QB Justin Herbert, LAC (Wk. 3: vs. Car.): I think it’s very likely that Herbert has a better real game than fantasy game this week. As I laid out with Josh Kelley above, Carolina has been absolutely shredded on the ground since the start of last season, especially in the red zone. I’d expect a lot of Austin Ekeler and Josh Kelley in this game. The Chargers are a 6.5-point favorite in this one and Christian McCaffrey, the engine of the Panthers’ offense, is sidelined. It feels like the most likely outcome is that the Chargers get out in front and stay there. I’d probably view Herbert as no more than a low-end QB2 this week due to limited passing volume.
RB Zack Moss, BUF (Wk. 3: vs. LAR): In a typical week with so many top running backs out, I’d be telling you to consider a guy like Moss as a flex option. He’s seeing plenty of red zone usage on a surprisingly potent Bills offense that has an implied total of 25 points this week. Unfortunately, he’s also dealing with a toe injury that has him not practicing yet as of Thursday. I think even if Moss plays he’ll be less effective than usual. The Rams are not a run defense to be afraid of, but I’d lean against starting Moss this week even if he is able to suit up. He’ll probably need to find the end zone to return any value.
RB JK Dobbins, BAL (Wk. 3: vs. KC): I fell for the trap on Dobbins a little bit after his week 1 breakout game. I already believed in his talent coming into the season, but week 1 made me believe he’ll get enough usage to be start-able in fantasy. Week 2 threw a bit of a wet blanket on that. The snap share wasn’t drastically different from week 1 to 2, but the touches were. Dobbins handled 7 carries in week 1 including 2 carries from the 2-yard line that he cashed in for scores, but in week 2 he touched the ball just 3 times. He managed to avoid a complete dud of a week by breaking off a 44-yard run to set up kneel downs at the end of the game. Mark Ingram & Gus Edwards combined for 4 red zone carries to Dobbins’ zero in week 2. The Ravens have one of the highest implied totals of the week at 28.5, but if you play Dobbins you’re counting on him getting in the end zone. I’d avoid starting him this week unless you’re in a tough spot due to injuries. He could be a reasonable fall-back flex option if you’re waiting on a player like Davante Adams for Sunday night or Sammy Watkins Monday, but Tre’Quan Smith and Mecole Hardman are guys that are probably available in your leagues that I would prefer in those situations.
RB Cam Akers, LAR (Wk. 3: @ BUF): Akers seems like to a long-shot to play this week, and I’d expect that if he does suit up he’ll be mainly there as insurance in case something happens to Darrell Henderson. I’d expect Henderson to handle the bulk of the work. The Bills aren’t an impenetrable run defense, but they aren’t one to target either, allowing the 12th fewest RB points per game so far this year (14th-fewest last year).
WRs Henry Ruggs & Bryan Edwards, LV (Wk. 3: @ NE): Ruggs and Edwards failed to do much last Monday in a game where the Raiders offense dominated possession, and this week they’ll face a Patriots’ secondary that is among the best in the league. Don’t be fooled by what the Seahawks did to them last week. Derek Carr continued to effectively lead his ‘death by a thousand paper cuts’ offense, dinking-and-dunking to Darren Waller and his running backs, and handing the ball to Josh Jacobs. The Patriots biggest personnel losses due to COVID opt-outs and players changing teams last offseason were in the defensive front 7. That’s the part of the defense that I’d expect the Raiders to attack. If Josh Jacobs sits, things get a little more interesting (he was held out of practice Thursday), but neither Ruggs nor Edwards would be more than a desperation flex play. I’d prefer Ruggs to Edwards this week if I had to choose one.
WR Justin Jefferson, MIN (Wk. 3: vs. Ten.): Jefferson has been on the field quite a bit in the first two weeks of the season, but the Vikings’ passing game has been a low-volume attack that runs through Adam Thielen. A third of all of Minnesota’s targets have gone to Thielen while Jefferson has been targeted just 6 times at an average depth of 8.8 yards downfield. Offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak talked about wanting to do a better job of getting the ball in his hands this week, but at that same presser said they need to run the football more. The Vikings already rank 31st in the league in pass attempts DESPITE playing from behind on 79 of their 96 offensive snaps so far this year…and Kubiak wants to run more. The matchup isn’t terrible for Jefferson this week on paper. On any snaps in the slot he should be lining up against 7th-round rookie corner Chris Jackson (PFF grade of just 27.2 through two weeks), but the Minnesota passing game is fundamentally broken right now. I wouldn’t look at Jefferson as anything other than a low-priced DFS dart throw in a limited slate tournament.
WR Chase Claypool, PIT (Wk. 3: vs. Hou.): Claypool’s final stat line in week 2 was impressive, finishing with 17.8 PPR points, but almost all of it came on one long TD catch. Outside of an 84-yard score, he had just 2 catches for 4 yards and played a total of just 24 snaps. It’s clear the Steelers are trying to get him involved and are drawing up a couple of shot plays for him each week, but his limited playing time makes him a risky weekly option. Houston has been a bottom-10 pass defense in terms of DVOA since the start of last season and gave up 12 pass plays of 40+ yards in 2019 (T-7th most in the league) but they haven’t given one up yet in 2020. Claypool is best left to DFS tournaments this week. The weekly floor is going to be below 5 PPR points until he moves up in the depth chart.
WR Van Jefferson, LAR (Wk. 3: @ BUF): Jefferson split the Rams’ WR3 snaps almost evenly with Josh Reynolds in week 1, but in week 2 he was out-snapped 42-to-26. That didn’t stop him from outproducing Reynolds with a 4-45 line on 5 targets (Reynolds went 2-33 on 2). Some of that target volume was undoubtedly the result of Robert Woods facing off with Darius Slay (Woods was targeted just 5 times), and although Woods gets another tough matchup this week in Tre’Davious White, it’ll be tough to rely on Jefferson unless he fully takes over the WR3 role. Jefferson doesn’t have a picnic of a matchup himself facing off with Levi Wallace, who was Pro Football Focus’s highest graded rookie cornerback a year ago. Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee are the Rams’ pass-catchers to target this week.
WR Brandon Aiyuk, SF (Wk. 3: @ NYG): Aiyuk’s debut was mostly inauspicious. He played 72% of the team’s snaps but was targeted just 3 times and finished with 2 catches for 21 yards. The offense will look a bit different this week with Nick Mullens under center and the combo of Jerick McKinnon and Jeffrey Wilson Jr. splitting the backfield duties. George Kittle could be out again as well. I’d look for the Niners to have a conservative game plan, but it’s hard to know exactly what that will look like. I’d probably avoid any 49ers for your lineups this week aside from Kittle (if he plays), Jordan Reed (if Kittle doesn’t play), and the two running backs I mentioned. You can’t trust Aiyuk to have a useful fantasy day based on what we saw last week.
WR Gabriel Davis, BUF (Wk. 3: vs. LAR): Davis is playing more snaps than you would expect for a number 4 wide receiver, but it isn’t translating to targets yet. Josh Allen has thrown the ball 81 times for 729 yards and 6 scores through two weeks, but Davis has seen just 3 of those targets and turned them into 3-22-1. The matchup this week should involve Jalen Ramsey following Stefon Diggs all over the field, so it could result in a little bit more volume for everyone else, but it would take a pretty sizable bump in volume to make Davis anything more than a TD dart throw. He remains a guy worth stashing in dynasty leagues though.
WR John Hightower, PHI (Wk. 3: vs. Cin.): With the news that Jalen Reagor has a torn ligament in his thumb Wednesday, Hightower is once again worth mentioning this week. He played 40% of the snaps in week 1 with everyone healthy, but that was with both Reagor and DeSean Jackson being limited to little more than half of the offensive snaps each. Week 2 saw Jackson and Reagor both function as closer to full-time players and the rest of the receiver group fighting for scraps. With Reagor sidelined, I expect to still see a lot of Jackson, and aside from him a mix of JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward & Hightower. With the Bengals likely to be without Geno Atkins & Mike Daniels at DT, look for Philly to play a lot of 2-TE sets and run the ball a ton. They’ll be eager to take a bit of the load off of Carson Wentz given how he’s played the first two weeks. For Hightower to return value this week, he’ll probably have to catch a deep ball or two, but his average target depth in week 1 was just 8 yards. I’d avoid him even as a bargain basement DFS play.
WR Quintez Cephus, DET (Wk. 3: @ ARI): Kenny Golladay practiced in full on Wednesday and should be good to go for this weekend’s tilt with the Cardinals. Cephus has been on the field more than 70% of the Lions’ snaps with Golladay out the first two weeks, but that number is going to drop drastically this week assuming Kenny G returns. Cephus has lined up in the slot on just 9 snaps. Danny Amendola will continue to serve as the team’s slot receiver with Golladay and Marvin Jones on the outside. Quintez will likely only see a handful of snaps and should be left out of any fantasy lineups this week.
TE Harrison Bryant, CLE (Wk. 3: vs. Was.): Bryant was on the field for more than 50% of the Browns’ offensive snaps last week and gets to face a Washington team that has allowed the 8th-most tight end points per game so far, but he just isn’t seeing the ball come his way enough to be useful. He’ll do just enough to be annoying to people starting Austin Hooper. The Browns’ offense is too run-heavy right now to be targeting either tight end for fantasy.
TE Cole Kmet, CHI (Wk. 3: @ ATL): I’m sure you already know better on this one, but I wanted to make sure you know to not get cute just because the Falcons couldn’t defend Dalton Schultz last Sunday. Kmet is still the Bears #3 tight end, and he should be nowhere near your fantasy lineups.

Deep League Sleepers, Stashes, & Cheap DFS Options:

RB JaMycal Hasty, SF (Wk. 3: @ NYG): Don’t throw Hasty into your lineups for week 3, but he’s an interesting guy to possibly scoop up in dynasty leagues with the injuries to Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. Hasty is likely to be promoted from the practice squad for this game, and I’d expect him to see at least a few touches. If he manages to impress with those touches he could ascend the depth chart quickly and possibly have a useful week or two in this very running back-friendly offense. He’s a shifty back that can be more dynamic than Jeff Wilson. He’s a player to monitor in deep dynasty leagues if he gets the call-up.
WR Tee Higgins, CIN (Wk. 3: @ PHI): Higgins saw a huge jump in playing time in week 2 with Auden Tate a surprising healthy scratch. I’d expect that to be the case again this week, and he’ll get the most favorable matchup of the receivers. Tyler Boyd will get Nickell Robey-Coleman in the slot, and AJ Green is likely to face off with Darius Slay. Higgins meanwhile will tangle with Avante Maddox. Higgins posted 3-35 on 6 targets last week, and so long as Burrow doesn’t have tunnel vision for AJ Green again, I expect the rookie to exceed that easily. He costs just $3,900 on DraftKings.
WR KJ Hamler, DEN (Wk. 3: vs. TB): With the news that Courtland Sutton is out for the season, Hamler suddenly finds himself to be a much bigger part of Denver’s plans. He was an explosive playmaker in college, and new QB Jeff Driskel has shown flashes of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s YOLO style back when he was in Detroit. This week isn’t an ideal matchup for Hamler since he will likely see a lot of ascending star CB Carlton Davis (Jerry Jeudy has worked mostly from the slot and is likely to avoid Davis), but Driskel targeted Hamler 7 times last week after coming on in relief of Lock. Driskel averaged 8.2 intended yards per attempt last year, which would’ve put him in the top half of all QBs if he played enough to qualify, and he was at 12.4 intended yards per attempt on Sunday. Hamler is a bit of a shoot the moon option this week as a minimum-priced WR on DraftKings. He also shouldn’t be on your league’s waiver wire in 12-team leagues.
WR Darnell Mooney, CHI (Wk. 3: @ ATL): Mooney’s impressive week 1 performance did in fact lead to more playing time in week 2. The Bears were comfortable enough with Mooney that they made Ted Ginn a healthy scratch for week 2 and let Mooney play 60% of the offensive snaps. Atlanta is an inviting matchup for receivers. Both Atlanta games this season have turned into shootouts with over 700 yards of combined passing offense in each. I don’t know that Chicago has the firepower to make that 3 in a row, but I like Mooney’s chances at a surprisingly solid week. I’d expect him to have a season-high in catches and yards, and he’s a sneaky flex option for deep leagues and costs the minimum in DraftKings.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Hopefully it helps you make some of your tougher lineup decisions involving rookies. It’ll be especially important this week to keep an eye on the injury report. There are a lot of statuses still up in the air as of this writing. Make sure you’re vigilant enough that you don’t start any inactive players, and make sure that whoever you put in your flex spot is the player in your lineup who plays the latest game of the week at his position. You don’t want to stuck without a fallback if a player is a last minute scratch like Tyrod Tylor or James White (condolences to him and his family this week). Feel free to hit me up on Twitter if you have any questions or want to yell at me about anything written above (@Shawn_Foss). As always: Good luck, trust your gut, and have fun. It’s just a game. 2020.09.25 03:10 ComprehensiveAmoeba9 If he isn’t open to hearing other people’s opinions that aren’t the same as his, walk away

I’ve come across my fair share of men who have badmouthed other people whose political views or religion doesn’t align with theirs. Even if their values and views are similar to yours, they will likely invalidate your thoughts and feelings in the future. If you have a disagreement with him, he will insist that he is right and will blame you for the problem, call you crazy, gaslight and manipulate you, gradually chipping away your confidence and self respect. If they are not open to different upbringings and cultures, that is another red flag!
I dated a guy who joked that he wouldn’t date me if I was a Trump supporter. I laughed a little at first because I wasn’t conservative (more libertarian) but then later on he bitched and complained about visiting my parents or having dinner with them because he was afraid they would try to force their Christian beliefs on him. They never did, but since Christianity is a big part of their life (they met at a missions minded college while they were getting their masters in Linguistics) they love telling their love story and the service they’re having at their church.
The same guy also made offhand comments about how disgusting my parents kitchen is, how they never washed their clothes or dried their towels correctly, how they live out in “the boonies” (it’s a suburb he had never heard of with a population of 50K). He always had a way of doing things and acted like he was better than everyone else. I started feeling bad about myself and questioned my worth (this was pre-FDS). We broke up eventually but he claimed it wasn’t my fault even though he was saying how i went crazy with anxiety because I knew something was off and questioned our relationship.
It was funny because as much as I missed him for the first few days, I felt so relieved and free of a judgmental asshole dictating how i and my family should do things. Save yourself the heartache from a relationship like this and look for signs he doesn’t respect the opinions of others. I was naive and thought that he was just passionate and Type A but it was likely he was a covert narcissist or something similar.
Bonus: A few days before we broke up he was making fun of his roommate for never using a dishwasher when he lived with his family. He called him uncultured and missing out on life. And this guy is one of his best friends! His roommate grew up in a small town out in the country in a very old house so they didn’t have a dishwasher

2020.09.24 18:52 beepbeepbeepmareep After years of being an atheist I think I'm a Christian?

Hi friends!
I'm new to this sub so apologies if this post doesn't belong here!
So my journey with religion has not been very long nor complex. I went to church with my school until I was 12 and being raised in an atheist household, it was never considered again once I changed school. I always enjoyed going to church but was happy to go along with my parents' anti-religion ideas. (I was briefly in the CU of my school and my parents were horrified thinking I had been indoctrinated. In reality I just thought it was fun!).
Christmases since have always felt a little bit empty without the church services and the charity and community they inspire. I aimed to replicate those concepts by myself instead by donating to charity, giving gifts that give money to those in need, and cooking food for people going through hard times.
Fast forward to university and I studied world religions for a semester, and fell in love with the all-encompassing peace and strength I found within Churches that I visited. I started to consider going to church but ultimately didn't feel able to because of my atheist views. I watched videos on bible readings as I love to learn but I never properly studied it.
After holidaying in Italy last year, visiting the Vatican and beautiful churches, I really felt more connected to God than I ever had before.
And for some reason this week, I woke up crying realising that I think it was Christianity that has been missing from my life. I've been praying, watching church service live streams (2020 is wild huh!) and I think I finally feel ready to commit.
So my questions are:
  1. Where do I start? I am scared, I know very little and haven't opened a bible in so long. I would love any pointers!
  2. How do I tell my family? Or do I? They are so against religion and I am concerned about their response. My partner is also a staunch atheist (it was one of the first things they checked with my on our very first date many years ago). I know they wouldn't be happy but I believe they would still support me no matter what.

2020.09.24 17:38 love_pendant I still can't agree with the Church's positions on social issues. I just need to talk to someone about where to go from here.

I'm currently in college, so I realize I still have many, many years to explore religion and faith. I've already been kind of exploring other religions these past few years anyhow by going to different services. I'm not desperate to call myself any particular label, but I just yearn for a place to belong and not feel guilty. Catholicism has been such a big part of my life up until this point, so I don't want to just cut off faith and community abruptly. Plus, I'm dating someone who considers himself non-denominational, and we've both expressed that we want to be better about implementing faith into our lives.
What I love most about the Church's teachings is the focus on love (at least, that's how I interpret it). I've always felt that the Church focuses more on a relationship with God than strictly Jesus, which is what I've sensed in a lot of Christian faiths. In the Catholic Church, I've felt like less of the focus was on "spreading the word", salvation through grace alone, and trying to convert others to the church and more about acts of charity/kindness and expressing love. This is a small detail, but I've always loved the more traditional singing, too. I've gone to Christian services where the music felt more like concerts I've been to, and I just couldn't sense the connection that I have when singing Psalms.
And yet, here I am. I cannot bring myself to agree with the Church's views on abortion, homosexuality, contraception, and even the Commandment of honoring one's parents (no exception for abusive parents...?). I feel like a lot of these views are deep-rooted in anti-feminism and condemning anyone who doesn't fit the idea of a nuclear family. They don't take into account exceptions. If they were even a little more lenient on views - like allowing abortions and contraception for medical reasons, recognizing LGBT marriages, and making an exception for abusive parents for that Commandment, then I could see myself staying in the Church. But alas; I cannot sit there in the pews every Sunday enjoying the service while also simultaneously disagreeing with major moral stances. I feel like a hypocrite, and I feel endlessly guilty.
What place do I have in the world? Am I alone in feeling this way? Does anyone have any suggestions for denominations/other religions they've found that have comparable focuses on charity/justice/love? Should I just turn my faith inwards and avoid going to church but just continue practicing charity and love on my own? I would appreciate any input, whether a comment or PM. Thank you so much.

2020.09.24 17:32 throwawayincelgf Been in a relationship with an Incel for 7 years

So, like the title, I have been in a relationship with a hateful incel guy. I’ve known him since we were in grade school. I just thought he was a very quiet, shy guy in our classroom but he got friends who played online games with him. Since we have the same "nerdy" interests, I was always talking with him about typical "nerdy" stuff. Then high school came around and he started to say flirtatious things. Long story short, we got into a relationship.
At first it was fine, or so I thought. The more I hung around his friend group, the more I realized how bad they were by saying how they wanted to rape some of their girl classmates, the female teachers, how one of them "secretly" wants to rape me while my boyfriend watches us etc. I brushed it off as teens trying to be edgy. Before we had our first sexual experience, he told me how much he preferred me to have the body of Megan Fox (I was 15 that time). Being very young and naive, it affected my self esteem and I googled on how to have big chest and butt fast lol. He would always demand me to wear skimpy clothes on our dates but he would also bad mouth Chads and Stacys and almost everyone with SO and girls wearing the same clothes as me as whores. It’s so uncomfortable but I just awkwardly laugh at it because he would get grumpy when I didn’t acknowledge his jokes. When I told him it’s wrong, he would also get mad at me and say they deserved to be harassed and raped.
We were in college that time. I was taking an engineering course and that was truly demanding. I had tests, projects, requirements to do everyday and we rarely had a time for each other. He told me to just stop taking it because engineering is a men’s job and I should just take something related to arts because it’s easier, plus he commented on how I could draw naked women or some hentai of us or some anime girl he fancied. He would always accuse me of cheating on him because most of my classmates and professors were men. I was so discouraged and disgusted.
When he finally took my virginity, he asked why my hymen didn’t bleed and accused me of having sex with other guys before him. I told him hymens don’t work that way and he only believed me because he googled about it. I told him we should use condoms because I might get pregnant but then he said it was only because I would cheat on him (wtf seriously) and he told me girls who take birth control pills were sluts and didn’t want to have responsibilities for having sex with multiple partners. When I missed my period for 3 months (I was 18 that time), I told him I might be pregnant and I wanted to have an abortion. He shamed and guilt tripped me, saying I should be responsible for what happened. It heightened the depression I felt and I started working while studying just to afford having this abortion. It still hurts and haunts me but I knew we weren't ready to raise another life in this world. I finally told him after and he told me not to worry about it anymore and we should just forget about it but how could I forget when he constantly mocked me about my "graveyard womb" and joke about it with his friends?
There were so many things that he did that obviously aligned with these hateful incels but the last straw was when he hacked my Facebook account and posted about how I cheated on him (which I never did. I was focused on getting my college degree) and tagged my parents about my abortion, posting screenshots of our conversations and calling it a "pity party". My parents were strict Christians and scolded me for this. At that time, I was so exhausted, mentally, physically, emotionally. He apologized the next day and again, told me to just start over again and I believed him.
I didn’t know that time these were red flags already. I just thought I could change his views/opinions and I didn’t give up on him. I truly loved him but his everyday hatred towards women and society were too draining but I still stuck around because he was my first boyfriend/my first love/my first everything.
Then I stumble upon these kinds of subreddits. I’m not really an explorer around the internet lol and I’m focused on my studies so this was all new to me. 7 years later, I found out my ex was and until now, is an incel. We just broke up this year before the pandemic started. You wanna know why? Because I told him I didn’t want to go out and risk getting infected just because he wanted a blowjob.
I cried when he told me he wanted to break up. I was so upset and devastated but I finally realized he wasn’t worth the tears. Before breaking up with me, he told me how "used" my vagina is right now, how "loose" it feels, how I’m not a "foid" anymore (I felt so disgusted when I searched up that term), how he thought I was a submissive "waifu" for him (since I’m half Japanese) and how he preferred my body when I was 15 like wtf. He was the only boyfriend I had and I never cheated or hooked up with any guy during our 7 years together while he got 2 girls to fuck around while I was busting my ass in college.
Now that I talked to someone new who is mature enough to understand the situation that we’re in, truly respected and loved me, I realized how much time I wasted with that incel. We’ve been only talking for months but I felt more love and appreciation versus that dreadful 7 year relationship I had. Take note, that guy isn’t a Chad; he’s not rich, not 6 ft tall, not Hollywood actor handsome. He’s just a decent normal guy capable of handling conversations without turning it to hate
I truly thought I could help him be a better person but no, only they can help themselves but they refuse it because they think the entire world is against them. They’re so full of hate and misery, they want everyone else to feel the same as well. I checked on his Facebook profile before deactivating my social media accounts for privacy and lo and behold, he‘s posting on how women are sluts and gold diggers and will only go for Chads and how someone like him will never get laid and experience love (like wtf is that 7 years dude?!) He’s also posting conversations with teen girls and comments hateful speeches on random women online while his friends cheer him on. I must admit I will miss playing D&D with them but I got a better party and dungeon master now lol
TL;DR: Ex bf was an incel, still agreed to be with him, treated me like absolute shit during our relationship, tried to help him but he never wanted to change, broke up with me because I told him I don’t wanna have sex during the pandemic, now he’s a full blown misogynistic asshole incel that targets and bullies young girls online. So yeah, major yikes.

2020.09.24 17:04 VertigoOne Pray I get a message back soon from a lady

Dear all,
So recently I met a very nice lady on the UK's Christian dating app Salt. For the sake of anonymity, we'll call her X.
Myself and X exchanged a few messages on Salt, swapped phone numbers, and have now had two nice phone conversations.
In our most recent conversation however, we weren't able to arrange a specific day for when we would next speak. I did ask, but she said we should chat about it via WA to arrange a date for a future conversation. She's a busy professional and I work from home, and we live in different cities, so I guess things were all over the place.
I messaged on Tuesday evening to ask, saying that from my perspective, Friday or the weekend would be best, and I've not heard back since then.
I've been muddling my way through the Christian dating online scene for a few years now, with precious little to show for it. Despite its separateness from the secular community, the Christian dating scene has comparable amounts of ghosting and other such unpleasantness. While I don't think that X has ghosted me - not enough time without contact has passed for that - the fear of it is very present because of what's happened before, and normally I'd be hardened to such things, but for some reason it seems not to be the case in this case.
So in short, pray please that I hear back from X soon, and that we're able to have another phone conversation, and things can move on.
Also pray that in this period I'm able to have faith rather than fear.
I realise that pouring too much of my hopes into this one possibility of a relationship is unwise, and normally I would take a more distant and pragmatic view of things. For some reason however, in this case I am unusually smitten, and keener than usual to hear back. So I just ask that I would
Thanks

2020.09.24 06:28 memesandcommunism LETTER TO REDDIT CEO

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc– If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

2020.09.24 03:45 JustaTorrance207 Embarassing First Time (M22)

Hey everybody. I’m more than a little down, and I need help.
So I’ve been a virgin up till now. Grew up a fundamentalist Christian and had opportunities when I was younger, but passed on them. After I realized how damaging my faith had become, giving me a harmful view of my sexuality, fueling my OCD and anxiety issues, and scarring me psychologically, I left. After I dealt with the fallout of that, I started dating. Right before the pandemic hit.
In the midst of the pandemic I met someone. We evaluated the risk, met up for the first time, and have been dating since. We’re still pretty early on in the relationship, and up till today had only done some minor fooling around: some oral, fingering, etc.
Today was going to be the day. We had talked about it, I was ready. And then we got into it, and... well, I couldn’t get it up. Or keep it up. I burned through half a box of condoms trying to make this thing work. She knows that I was basically hit over the head with how bad sex was when I was younger, so she was very understanding. She told me so many times that it was okay, that she’s fine not having sex atm, that we had so much more time to get together.
But I? I feel horrible. I expected, if anything, that it would be over too quick. Not this. And I feel such a deep sense of shame, wondering why (if I wanted it so badly, and I did) things weren’t coming together. I felt like every impotent character I’ve ever read about, and felt that she must think it reflects on her, which made me feel worse.
I guess I just need some encouragement, some advice, whatever y’all have to give. I know this is likely a temporary state, but I really don’t want it to be a permanent one. And I’m scared I’ll lose her if I can’t make things work. So hit me with what you’ve got guys. Anything helps.

2020.09.24 03:40 suckmycrocs69 How do Jills siblings feel about her “choices” tarot reading

Legal disclaimer: This is for entertainment purposes only.
I am clairvoyant and Clairaudient and I use tarot to as a tool to help confirm and to paint a better picture what I am hearing, seeing and feeling. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to read tarot, the way I receive messages might not be the way you receive them and that’s okay! Energies are all also fluent, and I’m simply picking up on what’s going on now in present time, not the future. Please remember This is meant to be lighthearted and fun.
*Now note. Derek in my readings often shows up as justice probably because justice is legal and he is studying to become a lawyer. Jill often appears as the queen of cups. A soft, sensitive, kind, emotional women. *
Anna: page of cups + 7 of pentacles she sees Jill has being childish, and immature/irresponsible with her choices. This combo screams that Anna is feeling like jill should grow up. The 7 of pentacles in this deck is very smug.
Josh: justice + the tower justice often is legal and we know Derek is studying to become a lawyer and as dated above Derek often shows up as justice in my readings. So I read this as he blames Derek, and also sees Jills choices as catastrophic. Ultimately he sees Derek as the one causing the chaos.
Jana: page of swords + moon + 9 of pentacles Ha! I’m screaming. Jana really doesn’t give a shit. BUT she is very secretive about feeling that way. Which makes sense she’s still at home with her cult. The 9 of pentacles in this deck is literally a women in her garden holding her carrots shows me that Jana is focused on herself and nobody else. I think Jana is used to be judged and most likely kind of knows how it feels on some level.
John David: 6 of pentacles + king of swords He doesn’t love it but he feels like as long as she keeps a balance it’s ok. Kind of like “ I wouldn’t choose that for myself but it’s okay if you do” now the flip side to that is with the king of swords I do think he would lash the fuck out on her if she went too liberal or progressive. I see this as being supportive with conditions. I don’t love the energy but I’ll take it.
Jessa: 10 of swords + 10 of cups reversed + hermit + 5 of cups lots of cards came flying out here. I don’t see any anger here, I see sadness and hurt. It’s almost like she feels hopeless in her connection with Jill, she feels sad that jill is separated from the family and she worries about Jills kids. There might have a blow up here. There’s a lot deep pain and distance here. Jessa might be purposely keeping a distance but she doesn’t like it.
Jinger: page of cups + the devil I’m hearing the word “floolish” which I mean can I just say get off your high horse Jinger. With that said Jinger sees Jills similar to how Anna sees Jinger It’s this energy of you need to grow up and take better control over your life. Kind of like your immature behavior is causing poor choices. Though I think it’s more about Jill leaving the show and pulling back from the family that upsets Jinger more then her actual choices of drinking, pants and all that shot.
Joy: king of wands + the empress are you kidding me lmaoo. The empress is the mother. Wasn’t Jill her fucking sister mom? What I see here is she loves Jill fiercely. I think the empress could also represent her feeling like Jill is a good mom, and I don’t think Joy is afraid to defend that with the king of wands. There’s really no judgment here. Also I mean wouldn’t be surprised if behind closed doors Joy and Austin drank beer?
Jed: 6 of swords + the hierophant I’m sorry but what a fucking freak. He feels like Jill needs deep spiritual healing. Almost like she’s not a real Christian. I could see him thinking or advocating for her to go to some creepy IBLP treatment center.
Josiah: the sun + justice + queen of wands it’s the opposite of sex pest! Where sex pest blames Derek Josiah feel like Derek helped changed Jills life for the better. He views Jill as a very fun spunky person. I have a feeling they are fairly close we just might not see much of it.
Lauren: temperance + high priestess these both very angelic cards. I think Lauren might actually look up to Jill as a godly women or some shit. I think that she doesn’t care because the fact that Jill is still a believer in god is more what matters to her VS if Jill has a nose ring. The temperance card also shows me that Lauren feels like Jill is still a balanced person despite her choices.
Jeremiah: five of cups + 10 of cups similar time Jessa but not as dark. He misses her, and he doesn’t like that she’s separated from the family. I also intuitively feel like he thinks that these are the choices she has made though, and that she brought it on herself.
Jenni: 4 of cups and the 10 of swords she feels hurt, and I think there’s repressed anger here. Like “you made these choices and now your barely in my life” I’m hearing “everything precious gets taken away from me” I think she’s upset with Jill the 4 of cups tells me that Jill has tried to reach out or make things better but Jenni isn’t having it.
James: judgement + the star pretty wholesome. He really hopes that Jill is healing. Not a lot to say it’s pretty straight forward.
Edit 1: I forgot about meech and boob. I’m going to do them now
Meech: 3 of swords + 5 of pentacles she feels pushed out of Jills life, left out in the cold very heartbroken. She might not agree with JB choice to push Jill out of the family kind of, but of course she could never say anything.
JB: 7 of swords + the sun again what a fucking freak. He feels like Jills choices are going to negatively impact the younger kids. Sun is often about children. Or it’s like he thinks she has some hidden agenda to go corrupt the kids. This also can represent that he feels like Jill is ruiming the family image. Regardless he thinks that she’s doing it on purpose, and that it’s calculated.
Edit 2: with Jenni you guys she’s 14, those like middle school years are tough for most of us. Energy can always shift and I’m sure it will in the future what I pulled is just present day feelings.

2020.09.24 03:32 TheNoFapExpert I think I am having a spiritual presence from God. I felt things that no one in my family felt.

I took the decision to follow God and his commandments this year because I suffer from porn addiction and I were disappointed by a christian girl who wanted to date me in the end of the year but started to ignore me. I was feeling sad and decided that in 2020 I would read the entire bible and pray more. I said to myself that God is my Lord and that I will give him my life and my soul.
I'm 22 and yesterday I finished the new and the old testament. I just need to read the psmals to finish my bible reading. But today, when I was cooking, I felt a very strong smell of incense. Nobody at my home was feeling it, but it was so strong wherever I was. Especially in my bedroom. I was reading on internet that this means that God presence is with me.
I don't know if this is exactly a good sign (or a bad one), but tell me your views. I don't know if this is related but this week I decided to create this account to guide people to don't fall in the same errors I fell (pornography). And I often have religious visions too.

2020.09.23 17:18 dirty-joy My girlfriend (F19) and I (M19) have been dating for more than 7 months and we're now about to break up because of different denominations

My gf and I have a really strong dynamic. We're always bringing each other up, gives each other advice and recommendations (she does that a lot more for me), always makes me smile, and I can go on. Because of this whole covid situation it has been more difficult to see each other in person but almost every day we facetime. One weekend she invited me over to her house for lunch and to meet her family. Of course, I was super excited and all, but that's where disaster strikes. I thought, overall, I presented myself alright and we had decent conversations as well. In the end, it didn't matter. My girlfriend calls me the day after saying she was given an ultimatum. Her family told her to stop dating me because I was a Christian. The silly part about this is that they're, wait for it... CATHOLIC. HOLY SHIT I was going to lose my mind. Her family was making her break up with me because I was a different denomination??? WE'RE LITERALLY PRAYING TO THE SAME GOD. It just blows my mind how I'm going to lose my girlfriend because of this. My girlfriend's point of view is that her family is the one supporting her for school and they trust her with a lot of things, so the least she can do is obey what they say. She said that the only different thing now is that we just won't have the title of bf and gf and that it will be a lot more platonic, but nothings really changed.
What the fuck do I do? How am I supposed to react? I'm still really glad we're on good terms, but I've been depressed ever since.
TL;DR: My gf's family tells her to break up with me because they're catholic and I'm Christian.

2020.09.23 15:23 yokoonoyes Relating FDS to Christian Values in Regards to Dating and Marriage

I wasn’t sure what flair to use so I hope the one I chose is acceptable.
Anyway, I came to FDS a few months ago because of a suggestion made to me by a member from an anti porn sub and I fell completely in Iove. It’s the first time I felt validated by other women who (finally) share similar mindsets as I do in this world full of pickmes and niceguys. My STBX husband is a narcissistic, manipulative, emotionally, verbally, mentally abusive man who always made me feel like I was asking too much, expecting too much, talking too much, taking up too much space, and basically BEING too much. I quickly realized after joining this sub that I was trying to enforce (force) high quality values on a low quality man. He enabled a porn addiction for the entirety of our relationship, had anger issues, nothing was ever his fault, never followed through on his word, never made commitments. I was a pickme when I met him and was always the one taking initiative and making big decisions and coaxing and coaching him through the relationship. We ended up getting married and having a kid together 🥴 In the last year things came to a head several times with the porn and video game habits and eventually he got into counseling and stopped the porn and video games but seemed to think that was “going above and beyond” for me and if I expect anything more from him then I am “ungrateful” and oh yeah, did I mention we’re cHrIsTiAnS? 🥴🥴🥴
So finally I’d had enough and called it quits. One of the very big ways he’d try to manipulate me was by telling me I wasn’t being a godly wife by leaving him or “disrespecting” him and “treating him like a piece of shit” (AKA holding him accountable for his toxic behavior and refusing to put up for it/standing up for myself). He wanted me to believe that being a Christian wife meant staying quiet and submissive and showing him respect no matter what he did. And so many self proclaimed Christians are quick to spew verses about how a woman should be submissive, let the husband lead, blah blah blah. They turn a blind eye to all the verses that hold men accountable for their words and thoughts and actions.
As a Christian woman with an antiquated view on marriage impressed upon me by mainstream Christianity, I initially had a difficult time getting FDS values and Christian values to coexist until I looked more into the Bible and saw for myself that FDS values are actually very similar to New Testament scripture (which is the only Testament Christians should be applying to our lives, contrary to popular belief) on the purpose of marriage and the roles between a husband and wife. FDS is firm in the belief that you should never give a man who you are only dating 100% of yourself. The Bible also says this. Don’t move in with him, don’t wash his underwear, don’t cook his meals, don’t have his children, and don’t give him all of your commitment until he puts a ring on that finger. This isn’t to protect a woman’s sacred virginity to make her holy and pure for a man but to protect the WOMAN from getting stuck with a low value scrote who will spend the rest of their married life sitting back with his feet up and letting her do all the work, never valuing her the way God expects men to value their wives. God knows their are many-a-scrote out there and gave Christian women their very own handbook in avoiding LVM, finding HVM, and being HVW. In the very first book of the Bible Genesis, it explains that men should always take initiative, take the lead in a partnership and always always always be held accountable for their actions. When Adam and Eve took a bite from the forbidden fruit, God didn’t ask Eve “why did you force feed Adam?” He asked ADAM why he ate the fruit when he knew better and was a so-called leader of the family. And already off the bat Adam was a fuckboi and was like “Eve told me to do it, this is all her fault” and God was all like “No bruh YOU ate from the fruit that was your decision, can’t nobody MAKE you do anything. You were supposed to be a leader, I give you free will so you can make good and bad choices for yourself bruh, GTFO since you wanna be a bitch ass.” Another example is in the New Testament when Jesus himself explains how men and women should treat each other in a marriage: Women, submit yourselves to your husbands (there it is! The infamous verse every Christian LVM likes to spew out), and husbands love your wives and Christ loved the church... and gave himself for her. LVM don’t want to have that conversation. Christ took up his cross and committed himself to the church, eventually sacrificing himself for the church and the people. He gave everything he had for the church. He lead the church, he took care of the church, he made sure nothing and no one disrespected the church. And he wanted husbands to enact the same values towards their wives. But everyone ignores that part??
Ladies, and specifically anyone here who is Christian — you are a muhfuggin CHURCH ok? You are sacred and special and important and YOU are the prize. YOU are the end goal. And you deserve a man who is willing to take up his cross for you, a man who will do ANYTHING to make sure you are loved and respected and taken care of. He will not let anyone or anything desecrate you. He will LEAD and TAKE INITIATIVE and always hold himself ACCOUNTABLE. If a dude you’re with doesn’t love you like Christ loved the church, dump 👏🏼 him 👏🏼 sis 👏🏼 bc he is not a HV man.

2020.09.23 06:54 assousa The UAE-Israel deal’s historicity is in the fine print

By James M. Dorsey
A close read of the agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel suggests that the Jewish state has won far more than diplomatic recognition. It won acknowledgement of its claim to historic Jewish rights. By the same token, the UAE has received a significant boost to project itself as a leader in inter-faith dialogue.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United Arab Emirates Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed walked away from this month’s White House signing ceremony with more than just an agreement to establish diplomatic relations.
Included in the agreement are references that are key to foundational Israeli arguments asserting the right of the Jewish people to a state on what was once predominantly Arab land rather than simple recognition of the fact that the Jewish state exists.
Recognition of Jewish rights has long been a demand put forward by Mr. Netanyahu.
In talks with the Palestinians as well as the building of relations with Arab states over the years, the Israeli leader asserted that mere diplomatic acceptance of Israel’s existence was not good enough. And yet, that was the basis of earlier peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan as well as Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Yasser Arafat’s 1988 recognition of Israel and the subsequent 1993 Oslo accords.
From the outset, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been as much a dispute about control of land as one of perceived rights.
Recognition of Jewish rights in Palestine bolsters Israeli assertions that its claims to territory occupied during the 1967 Middle East are legitimate rather than a land grab resulting from military conquest.
To be clear, it does not by definition endorse annexation, but it constitutes Arab acceptance of Israel’s position that any compromise between Israelis and Palestinians, a sine qua non for a resolution of their dispute, would involve mediation of claims that are historically and morally on par.
Arabs in the past have projected solutions as the need to address Palestinian rights while accepting Israel’s existence.
The agreement did not explicitly recognize Jewish rights, but enabled Israel to interpret the deal as doing so by stating that “Arab and Jewish peoples are descendants of a common ancestor, Abraham.”
The text of the agreement suggests that the reference was primarily related to allow the UAE to boost its efforts to project itself as a leader of inter-faith dialogue and a moderate interpretation of Islam – a pillar of the country’s well-funded soft power campaign that paints the Emirates as a militarily capable, forward-looking, religiously tolerant and technologically savvy, cutting edge state.
The interpretation of the phrasing as recognition of Jewish rights may have been an unintended consequence or icing on Israel’s cake.
It was a bonus that David Makovsky of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy -- widely viewed as leaning towards Israel -- was quick to point out. Mr. Makovsky noted that the reference implied that “both (Arabs and Jews are) indigenous to the Middle East.”
Mr. Makovsky suggested that the phrasing “is important because it clearly refutes longstanding allegations in the Arab world that Zionism is alien to the region.”
It puts past to Arab and Palestinian arguments that the long-touted two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was one of dividing up land claimed by two parties driven by facts on the ground rather than consideration of legal and moral claims.
This is not just of esoteric significance. It bolsters Israel’s long-standing rejection of Palestinian insistence on the right of refugees, including those who left during the 1948 war, to return to their homes and lands in what is now Israel.
Israel’s reading of the agreement as endorsement of its assertion that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is about equally valid rights is likely to be interpreted differently on both sides of Israel’s right-left divide.
The country’s weakened left will see it as highlighting the need for territorial compromise. Significant segments of the Israeli right will view it as validation of its belief dating back to the period prior to the 1948 creation of Israel that the clash of Jewish and Palestinian rights is irreconcilable. That is a view that has historically also resonated among elements of the labor movement.
That may be what makes the UAE-Israel deal truly historic.
The icing on the UAE’s cake, beyond the significant geopolitical, military, security, technological and economic benefits of the agreement, is the stress on inter-faith dialogue.
Under the agreement, the UAE and Israel “undertake to foster mutual understanding, respect, co-existence, and a culture of peace between their societies in the spirit of their common ancestor, Abraham, and the new era of peace and friendly relations ushered in by this Treaty, including by cultivating people-to-people programs, (and) interfaith dialogue…”
The UAE, like Saudi Arabia, one of its multiple autocratic religious soft power rivals, has gone in recent years to great lengths to cultivate ties to Jewish and Evangelist communities and to position itself as a sponsor of an inter-faith dialogue in which Islam is represented by Muslim scholars who preach absolute obedience to the ruler and reject endorsement of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its an interpretation of the faith intended to ensure regime survival and counter allegations of violations of human rights in the UAE.
The signing of a Document on Human Fraternity by the imam of the Al-Azhar Grand Mosque in Cairo, Ahmed El-Tayeb, and Pope Francis I during his 2019 visit to the UAE, the first by a head of the Vatican to the Gulf, served to offer an alternative to the Universal Declaration that allows the Emirates to pick and choose which rights it accepts.
The emphasis on inter-faith dialogue is bolstered and conditioned by the agreement’s implicit condemnation of political Islam, a key driver of UAE policy that is shared by Israel.
The agreement rejects “political manipulation of religions and…interpretations made by religious groups who, in the course of history, have taken advantage of the power of religious sentiment…in a way that has nothing to do with the truth of religion.”
Omar Ghobash, UAE Assistant Minister for Culture and Public Diplomacy, speaking in a US-UAE Council webinar, noted that one driver for the conclusion of the agreement was “what happened around the so-called Arab Spring and then the rise of vicious groups like ISIS, let alone Al Qaeda.”
Mr. Ghobash was referring to the 2011 popular Arab revolts that toppled the autocratic leaders of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen as well as the rise of the Islamic State in the aftermath of the uprisings, which was a product of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq rather than the rebellions.
He projected the agreement as part of the UAE’s institutionalization of its values.
“There is a distortion that has taken place over the last few decades…represented by groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS … There is a recurring theme in conversations with my leaders and that is that Islam has been hijacked by these groups. The reality is that in taking Islam back, you need to free it from those constraints. You free it by presenting a different expression of Islam,” Mr. Ghobash said.
Critics suggest that the agreement’s formalization of Israeli support for the UAE’s propagation of a state-controlled Islam fails to tackle a core issue: the need to address religious concepts that are either outdated or outmoded or require reconceptualization and reinterpretation.
Those concepts legitimized decades of Muslim demonization of Israel as well as Jews, Christians, and other non-Muslims.
The UAE took a first major step to address the issue by distributing to schools barely two weeks after the announcement of the establishment of diplomatic relations textbooks that cite the agreement with Israel as an expression of fundamental Islamic and Emirati values.
However, the ultimate litmus test of the UAE’s effort to shape moderate Islam will be if and when it loosens the state’s grip on religion and allows for free-flowing, credible theological debate in which scholars tackle problematic religious concepts that have served their purpose but are out of place in a modern, forward-looking society.

Is something happening right now? Lots of posts about JWs today in this sub and I can't tell if they're a response to something contemporary or if the sub is just on a JW kick today.

I'm sorry but even through you've rejected the JW religion, you're still carrying around some of the brainwashing they left you with.
Virtually all fundamentalist protestant sects pride themselves on biblical inerrancy and their adherence to it and by no strech of the imagination do the JWs have a unique claim to being "all-in". They pick and choose like any other as the core problem of fundamentalism is that the language of the bible is too far removed for a truly "accurate" translation in to today's understanding.
Again, and I don't mean to be so personal, but the way that you split Christianity into "generic Christian" / Catholic / JW shows that you don't understand the true diversity within Christianity. JW is about the worst example of fundamentalists that I could think of and that's not because fundamentalists are some category worth defending. And to defend more mainline chruches, evolving with the times is something that they pride themselves in and dismissing that as "picking and choosing" is the exact sort of divisive propaganda that a shunning religion like JW has indoctrinated you with.

Ex JW here. Its the worst kind of cult. It shatters family bonds in half. It leaves men with a warped sense of misogynistic power in marriage. It teaches to always self doubt because you need the a governing group of elders to tie your shoes. All free thinking is prohibited.
It is full of unbelievers who only stay out of fear of ostracism, leading to corrupt ranks of closet gays, pedophiles and spousal abusers who enjoy the cult rules that protect them from punishment.
Funny thing, they have a prophecy specifically related to government persecution. So if there happens to be widespread government crackdown on their bullshit cult they will actually redouble their recruiting efforts.
Bunch of fucking clowns.

Except he wasn't. December 25th is not the day Jesus was born, not even by the ancient calendar they used in his time.
December 25th was decided by the clergy to coincide with yule so Christianity would be more appealing for pagans to convert. That's also where the Christmas tree tradition comes into play, because that's a pagan tradition for yule. This a pretty common criticism that even atheists make of Christianity, bcause science and historians uncovered that long ago.
The difference between JW and other Christian denominations is that they take an extremely literal view of the bible and apply it to their lives. As in, their members are expected to actually memorize the Bible and be able to recognize and reference any verse from it. A point of pride for them is that an average JW member should be able to school any average Christian or Catholic in a spiritual debate.
While Christianity over the years has paraphrased its lessons to be more palatable and attract more converts. For JWs, if it wasn't in the bible it didn't happen. They don't believe in baby faced cherubs or the concept of heaven and hell because that stuff is not actually in the bible. The true description of Angels are actually really trippy and the bible states that Heaven is meant to be God's domain with no admittance for humans. The Heaven/Hell thing was basically the Santa Claus nice/naughty list.
I'm not a JW, but I gave them a shot because my sister is one. She wasn't forced to cut us off or anything like that. If anything, my family treated her like shit for it. They taught me what they were all about, but eventually asked that I commit to join. My sister didn't pressure me or anything, but I chose not to. The person teaching me didn't mind and my sister didn't mind. We all still talk to this day as friends. I was interested in seeing why people hated them and I still don't see it.
I've asked them directly all the questions and issues I've heard:
Asked them about their extreme view on the patriarchy and nuclear family. They told me technically that only applies as long as the husband is acting within his capacity as a true Christian. If he's being abusive or something, he is obviously no longer acting like a Christian. Under their own doctrine, he would be cast out and ostracized while the wife and family should be supported.
Asked them about their stance on Holidays: if they're not in the Bible, they don't celebrate. As in, the bible specifically has to state that they recognize holiday. The only one that applies is Easter for the resurrection. There is no biblical mandate to celebrate Christmas and Jesus was not born on the 25th of December.
Their door to door recruitment: the bible actually does state that it is the duty of a Christian to teach their faith and seek to convert as many people as possible.
For the record, I am an atheist. When I was younger, I flirted with the idea of becoming spiritual. However, that was mostly my curiosity about my sister's religion. As an organization, I'm sure the crimes and abuses are true. However, every sect of Christianity is evil and abusive at the administration and organizational level. At a grassroots, local level I respect JWs more than other Christians. At least they're all-in and not picking what's convenient for them.

Fair and reasonable answer.
Sounds like it is good you are away from that level of evil.
I’m sorry it happened to you. I was challenging a jw over shunning and they said “ that’s is the past we don’t do that anymore “ which is theocratic warfare, I’m not a jw so it is good to lie to my face. Amazing. wt teach that.

As an Ex-Catholic atheist with a close JW coworker, I basically agree with your take.
  • Jesus was most likely not born on Dec 25th.
  • JWs often have much of the Bible memorized
  • Few holidays, no birthday celebrations.
  • Heaven and Hell concept is separate from common view point.
At a grassroots, local level I respect JWs more than other Christians
I think you're getting some criticism about this, but I get what your saying. To me, I have seen many people who claim to be Christians. They go to church, maybe donate or whatever, but for them it's just a club with social perks and a sense of self-righteousness. It seems almost superficial. It's not the core of their life. In the case of JWs and a handful of other denominations, this behavior appears less common (although still present).

I was forced by my mom to go to the kingdom hall (church) when I was young. Probably from 8-14 years old. I actually never really experience any of the cult stuff that everyone talks about. I always thought they were nice people, just really really into their beliefs. The worst part was going door to door witnessing. It felt so embarrassing as a child and if I saw one of my school friends, I would be made fun of at school.
I was young so I probably didn't notice everything going on around me.
During this pandemic the church services are done through Zoom and they don't go door to door witnessing. I commend them for this.

I know a woman.. or used to know a woman who was an ex-JW. She had 2 kids. She was very liked by a lot of people in the local community. She took her own life, because she was harrased by JW's. It became too much for her. She literally talked to a priest (protestant) for 2 hours everyday the last month of her life, because she couldn't handle it much more. She made several posts on social media, about how her children were the only reason she was alive. You could tell something was wrong.
It was so sad, when we heard about the news about her suicide.

You can say you’re an apostate without lying. JW’s consider anyone openly opposed to them to be apostates, even if the individual was never a jw to start with.

I dated a JW once. It was both of our first gay relationship. Not ashamed of my sexuality but he very much was. The guilt took a HUGE toll on him. There was a lot of emotional abuse and one instance of physical that I let slide because it broke my heart knowing what he was dealing with inside. I tried everything I could to be supportive but when the relationship got to real he'd pull away. I wouldn't react in the best of ways as seeing my first and probably only love slip away was terrifying. I had no idea what JW's were or what the stood for before I met him. After a constant cycle of guilt then breaking up with me cause of it I was left completely broken and shattered after finding out he was also a sex addict and was cheating on me with other guys. They have a great way of making you feel wrong. You can't argue with them because they are literally trained to win debates and arguments and when something doesn't fit their narrative they are quick to shut the conversation down. We'll never speak again....I think about him a lot and wish I was able to atleast have a distant friendship with him but he's fully gone.
They're pretty heartless people, I guess when you can easily cut out anyone in your family cause they don't agree with you they don't get to feel what true unconditional love is. I didn't care what he believed in or what he thought to be the truth was. I just wanted to see him happy with life and himself. He was my best friend...I hope he found some peace.

That's not correct.
JW doctrine takes an extreme literal interpretation of the Bible and applies it to their lives. Generic Christianity paraphrases the bible to fit their narrative.
For example: December 25th is not the day Jesus was born. This is a fact. Christianity invented Christmas to coincide with Yule so pagans would be more likely to convert if they can still practice their tradition. That's actually where the Christmas tree tradition comes from because pagans would raise trees in honor of Tyr during yule celebrations.
A more correct statement is that Christianity is similar to JW doctrine. I'm not saying JWs are better, but they are the same brand of corruption and evil.

2020.09.23 02:09 NameIsNotUsed Entitled Girlfriend/Parents try to force me into a toxic relationship

I don’t know if this is Entitled Parents, or Entitled People, but either way, I need to get this off my chest, and at least get some feedback on this.
I am gonna say this right away: My Parents were Bible-thumping hypocrites. They were completely the definition of it during the early and later years of my life. They would not allow any forms of magic, Pokemon, PG-13 (unless Christian related), or any parties growing up. I was not allowed to have friends over or even allowed to talk to women of any kind growing up, and when I did, my older brother was “more suited” to take them as his own. At one time, my family had a family friend with a beautiful county girl daughter whom I fell hard for. I told my parents and my mom simply rolled her eyes, and told me: “Sweetheart, she wouldn’t even notice you.” Even though me and her with friends and we had clear chemistry, but no, my mom encouraged, no, kinda PUSHED my older brother to be with her. They started dating the DAY I told my parents that I liked her.
Fuck that.
I since then have hidden how I feel about women I thought I liked and discarded the ideas since my older brother would attempt and successfully take them from me before I even had a shot. Thanks to my mom, my older brother thought he was the hottest man alive, while me, having a slim build but look like the dork (glasses, dork smile and green eyes), was just “a teddy bear that girls grow up from” as he put it was how he viewed things. My parents have always wanted to PICK my girlfriend and demanded this three month cycle: Three months Dating, three months engaged, then married. Funny, since they were dating for a year and engaged for a year. Also my family had STRICT rules for dating:
1-The age rule went from 16, to 18, to moved out and has a stable job.
2-Must be Courting: A SIBLING OR PARENT must be at all dates
3- No “passionate hugging” (if you know whom I referencing, you’re cool in my book)
4- No Friends of the opposite gender
Those rules were GRILLED into me, and my older brother broke many of these as did my sister below me, but those are for another day. I constantly had to follow the rules and I wasn’t able to date, ever.
Until I was a year into the US Army.
I serve in the US Army, as a Military Policeman at this time, and have for a year. I was depressed as I didn’t have many friends thanks to me not fitting in as much, (wonder why: maybe from the ZERO social Skills that I got from being Homeschooled and not allowed to go out and get friends outside of homeschool groups or work), and I was constantly getting told that I was better off dead by some of the joes and leadership (that is not a joke, and I had reported them many times, some actually faced legal UCMJ action). My head was in a funk, so that’s when my parents thought instead of THEM being supportive and being there for me, they got me HER.
Her, referring to a woman one year older than me, who we will call Alice. Alice, had a “bad relationship prior to me”, with a four year old child. She was not attractive to me, and I had no interest in a romantic relationship at the time. I just wanted to feel supported, not in a romance way. Not only that, my parents told me straight up: “She and you will date!” And my siblings (all 11 at the time, yes, 11.. I have 11 siblings) agreed and said “she is so cute and has a baby~ so cute!” So I reluctantly agreed to this relationship even though she lived far away from me so it had to be over the phone.
The red flags:
Alice was telling her daughter to call me Dad, after one week of us talking. One. Fucking. Week. I didn’t say I love her, or even liked her. No. I was “Dad” to this innocent girl who, of course, was adorable. I didn’t like Alice, but the little girl who I’ll call June, stole my heart. June was cute, shy, and her words for me were always “Daddy~!!” in the sweetest voice ever. And let me say, June had my heart (well, then again, when you have a small girl looking at you like you are her world, it hurts to say you’re not and warms your soul), but Alice didn’t. Alice knew I fell for June, and decided that whenever me and her had an argument, JUNE was her weapon of choice. One time, me and her were arguing about me going to the field to train and I had to leave my phone. Alice DEMANDED I take my phone so “June can see her DADDDYYY...” my heart raged with anger and I hung up. Then, Alice called my parents, and sure enough, I got a phone call from my mom (EP). I answered immediately.
Me: hello mama~
EP: Hi OP, how’re you doing?
Me: I am doing fine... worn out from packing to go to the field. (I had to told her that I’m leaving a week prior)
EP: Oh.. are you bringing your phone?
Me: Sadly I can’t. I have to focus on training.
EP: oh... you made Alice cry btw.
Me, now pissed that Alice went and told my mom all this.: sigh I don’t care at the moment... she tried to use June as a weapon to have me break the rules.
EP: Well.. you could just BRING it without them knowing... sneak it in so she can see you.
Me: MOM! I can’t just do that! (I was already in deep water for texting my mom during a range to tell her, conveniently, that I was NOT talking to Alice while I was going to the field)
EP: Oh.. I was just trying to make things good for you two. I love you.
Me: I love you too....
After she hung up, I turned off my phone. I didn’t need any more of that. I went to the field and had a genuine crap time thanks to my squad making me do the most tasks of Weapons and Fire Guard. And when the missions came, they left ME to do guarding and not go fire my weapon or get any real training. Once back home, I turned on my phone to see 1,000+ messages from both Alice and my Mom, fifteen missed calls, and my favorite: Two HANDWRITTEN letters about how I was “a jerk for leaving June without a goodbye” from Alice. I was pissed and called it all off that night. I was done. I told Alice to leave me alone and I broke up with her, and I also told my parents to not talk to me for a bit. I was pissed. They KNEW I had some big training going on and decided to not only not support me, but to try and make me in trouble, but also MAKE me feel Guilty when I get home. I kept off my Facebook and the like to avoid social media. I read my Bible and my Study guides during this time with my outlet of Dead by Daylight. A week passes, and I finally unmute my Messanger (my way of talking to Alice, as she didn’t have a landline number or as she told me)
Holy. Captain. America.
She sent me, three paragraphs of text per six hours. Videos of June CRYING for her “Dad”, called me several times, and even recorded herself crying. She begged for me to take her back. I said no. My mom, apparently, without telling me, told HER I was in LOVE with her and just didn’t know it yet, so she was all hyped on it. Also... it was three months into our relationship.
My parents made me spend my savings, on a ring. They threatened to disown me if I didn’t do it. They kept telling me “You don’t have to get engaged to her, but if you do you will have ZERO problems in life, and the army will be so much easier. And you will be able to have June as a daughter fully~” yes, my mom said that. My dad (D), was not as pushy so he doesn’t get the entitled treatment. He was trying to stop my mom from overdoing it, but also was supporting her more so. He just knew where to draw lines. He told me that I am breaking her heart by not making a choice. I didn’t want to make a choice. I didn’t love her. At all. Unlike Alice, who told me that she loves me so much she will be willing to take my virginity. (Side note: She never did, thankfully) I drew the line there, but my parents then started to make me feel like shit, how I was “abusing June, lying to her that I was her dad when I didn’t even marry Alice” or “you are just after the fun, and making us cry.” Even though me and her never even met in person.
So, I did. I got engaged to her. About a week in, a female soldier from my company came to me crying. She was pregnant and her baby daddy was lying about her and trying to punish her for not getting an abortion, as she was so pro-life. I stood up for her one time so she considered me a friend. She told me one day she needed to talk to someone off line about the things and she trusted me. So, I agreed to meet her after work. I knew she was in a bad spot with her baby daddy and his friends bullying her. So I told my mom and Alice I was going to be out with a friend who is in a rough spot. I made the mistake and said “She has been going thru a rough spot so we are going out out to talk.” And Alice yelled at me that I was cheating on her. She grabbed a knife and on the phone, I heard her scream. She yelled in pain. She then sent me photos: She CUT herself. Had fresh cuts down her arm and scars. She threatened to do more. I did the only thing I could do. Told her to stop and called her mom. She (her mom) told me there was NOTHING she could do about her daughter. The Fuck?! She complained on and on about how ITS MY JOB as her fiancé, and I should always bend to her needs over mine. I explain that a soldier needs a person to talk to, and she wouldn’t take it. I just ended up leaving to be there for my friend, and my friend thanked me, and asked me how my life was.... I just told her that everything is fine. The following day, things got worst. My ex-fiancé posted “CHEATER” on my Facebook and called my friend a “Whore Slut Manstealer” over her page. We both got attacked by everyone and it took the both of to explain all me and her did was talk and have a meal, no romantic evaluation to it. She and I were just pissed and our friendship ended. I broke up with my fiancé on it, and told her not to speak to me again. She then told my parents that she was going to KILL herself from the “mental trauma I gave her by being so rude and selfish”. My EP called me and DEMANDED I get back with her. I promptly told her no. A few weeks pass, I have no sleep. Not from breaking up with Alice, not from my EP trying to get me back with her... but from the fact I was receiving phone call, by phone call, by text, email... HOURLY. Sometimes in minute fractions. I yelled at Alice to leave me alone and she then showed her arms she cut open and the new scars and said it was getting worst because she still loved me. I reluctantly agreed to stay in contact but she took it as “me and her are engaged again” and slid back on her ring and called my mom promptly and my EP called me and said “Glad you came to your senses, and did the RIGHT thing.”
The Truth comes out cold.
I remember this day like no other. My Beat Friend, we will call Nick, called me up. I was up, playing my favorite game of Fossil Fighters Champions on my DS and answered.
Me: Hey Nick~
N: Dude. Break up with her.
Me, confused but sighs: Nick.. I want to so badly but my folks-
I get cut off by Nick: She Sent NUDES to my roommate.
Me, not shocked but still stunned, as I drop my DS:... what?
Nick then proceeds to tell me all he learned from his roommate. His roommate was basically talking to Alice since they met via her talking to Nick one day to ask about me. Alice apparently took his number and talked to him, every day. She asked him questions about him and that day, he asked her if she thought he was cute. Alice said yes then proceeded to send a NUDE of herself to him and asked him, “Am I hot?” The roommate then proceeded to have phone sex with her, aware that me and her we’re together at this point and time. They did this for long since me and Alice were together, even making plans to meet. My heart, no longer feeling anything, thanked Nick and talked to Alice to get the truth. She denied it all and told me I’m not thinking right, even getting my mom involved but then I got the transcripts from Nick and sent them to my EP and her. Alice cried and begged for me to forgive her, my EP even told me this was “just a mistake.. and could be forgiven.” Then told me that I should GET BACK with her. I denied her, and have never talked to Alice since. Another note, my older brother laughed when he found out and told me she was sending HIM nudes as well and wanted to meet at a family function to fool around with him, which he then showed me his transcripts of messages with her, and was VERY proud of it. I hated him ever since but still love him today. As for Alice, well... She tried to guilt trip me and I didn’t have any of it. I blocked her on all my socials as did my family (still unsure on my older brother), and my EP tried to coax me a few times but even my Dad was fed up with her crap. He told HER to back off and let me pick, as I learned he only agreed to this because he saw I was broken from being alone in Hawaii all by myself and my mom told him, “It’s the best thing for him.”
It’s been two years, and now I’m with a beautiful girlfriend whom I chose to be with. I love her and she has not turned her back on me as she knows about the stuff I have been thru. My EP has apologized and me and her are on good terms, though she is not touching my relationship with my current girlfriend, whom I have a ring for and plan to get engaged to over the holidays. Thanks again for reading, and “Alice” if you’re reading this, I forgive you, but I will never forget. To you readers, I am sorry if I seem all over the place, I just hate re-experiencing this. I just need to get it off of my chest, and get some good feedback on what I should have done.
TLDR: I was forced into a relationship over a phone by my Mom, was cheated on by the woman I was forced to be with, and EP tried to get me with her again.

2020.09.23 01:15 konradkurze202 CK3 Review/Suggestions

So, like many of you, I have finally completed a full run 867 -> 1453 (or w/e the end date is) and I have some thoughts.
First up: OMG do I love the Syncretic tenets! In CK2 my least favorite part of playing a smaller religion (like Jewish or Norse, etc) was having 0 marriage options and just ending up marrying my vassals because thats all who'd have me. The Syncretic traits really open up marriages/alliances and keep that whole diplomatic portion of the game alive even when playing as the last Jewish ruler, or as the Norse emperor after unifying scandinavia.
Men at Arms >>>>> retinues.
New terrain types are awesome ways to make certain areas more economically desirable. And Development is a nice way to really build up territory over time so it starts becoming worth more.

Its not all roses and sunshine though, when I played a game as a Catholic ruler I couldn't really bring myself to keep playing because it is so silly to see Catholicisms Fervor to drop to 20% every decade due to some random bishop no-one cares about being 'sinful', then having swathes of Europe switch to whatever new heresy just popped up. My main game was mostly in Africa/Arabia, but by the end of the game the Byzantine Empire (still super strong) was Cathar, England was Orthodox, Italy was Lollards, and Catholics were kinda spread out in smallish enclaves. Religions shouldn't be anywhere near so fragmented, unless the player deliberately intervenes to cause it.
Also all Christian/Muslim nations should be able to intervene in a holy war when the defender is a heresy of their religion. Sure Catholics don't like Lollards, but they'd rather have Lollards as neighbors than Asatru or Muslim.
The other big problem (from my point of view) is huge empires are way too stable. The Byzantines grew in size over the course of the game, rather than shrinking. The Holy Roman Empire swallowed France, the small parts of Spain that remained Christian, England, and parts of Scandinavia. Vassals should be less inclined to sit meekly in an Empire controlled by a different culture, the fact that France (controlled mostly by the king of Aquitaine) just sat under a German Emperor for a century is silly.

All in all though I'm having a ton of fun with CK3, and am very much looking forward to seeing where it goes from here. CK3 is a much improved base game over CK2, though it is missing some DLC features (which I'm confident will be added in time).
